The Difference Between Dentures and Partial Dentures

DenturesDentures and partial dentures are a great option to consider when you are in need of dental replacements. Contrary to popular belief, dentures are much more useful, comfortable, and realistic-looking than they once were. Today, dentures are apt to competing against other dental replacements for the most convenient and effective teeth replacement. If you have decided you would like dentures, there are a few key differences to note between dentures and partial dentures.

Full Dentures:

Dentures, also known as complete, traditional, or full dentures, are chosen when a patient is missing all of their teeth. The teeth can be missing in the upper or lower jawbone. Complete dentures are available in two styles, known as conventional or immediate dentures. Conventional dentures are preferable within the first eight to 12 weeks after removing the final tooth. These dentures are less invasive, so the gums will have time to heal.

At first, this option is not normally preferred as most people want immediate replacements. Immediate dentures are ready for use as soon as needed, without a wait time for healing. Immediate dentures are often preferred since most people do not want to have to go without teeth for a period of time. Immediate dentures will need to be readjusted as the patient's gums and mouth shape change while healing. This can be considered an inconvenience, but in most cases, immediate dentures are only considered a temporary solution.

Partial Dentures:

Partial dentures can help a patient who only has a few remaining teeth. Partial dentures can be removable or remain in place. Removable dentures remain in place by metal framework and clasps. Fixed partial dentures are also known as dental bridges.

These dentures remain in place by placing crowns over healthy adjacent teeth that will work as anchors for the prosthetic tooth or teeth to suspend in the gaps. Fixed partial dentures are a better option, as they help preserve the shape of the dental structure by taking up the space left vacant in a more permanent form.

Dentures and partial dentures are both effective options to consider when you need teeth replacements. If you are able to use them, partial dentures may be a better option as they help retain the health of your remaining teeth and bones. Both options may take some time to get used to, as they will feel unusual in a mouth that has not had teeth taking up space. The longer you wear them, the more comfortable they will get. Dentures and partial dentures improve chewing and your ability to speak. At first, these functions may also feel funny, but once you are accustomed to them, they will feel completely natural.

Our dentures are created with the highest quality of materials to provide a durable, resilient, and attractive replacement for missing teeth. Whether you choose full or partial dentures really depends on your specific needs. To learn more about both dentures and partial dentures, visit Grove Creek Dental or call us at (801) 449-8897.
